This Thursday, January 26, the forum was held 'ESG (Environmental, Social and Governance) Trends and Keys in 2023' of Foretics which addressed the main milestones and global trends in environmental, social, transparency and good governance issues from a business perspective for this year.
The organization, a benchmark in sustainability and corporate social responsibility, representative of the World Business Council for Sustainable Development (WBCSD) in Spain and leader of the Spanish Business Council for Sustainable Development, highlighted the five main actions that companies will focus on in order to implement sustainability.
ESG Trends and Keys for 2023
1- Moment of truth.
Sustainability faces a consensus fracture for its implementation due to the macroeconomic, geopolitical and social polarization crisis facing the planet. This situation has affected markets and increased inequality globally, soand companies must make greater efforts to show that sustainability is the way, especially with an emphasis on the implementation of the circular economy.
2- Sustainability is consolidated in the CEO's mind
According to Jaime Silos, Director of Corporate Development at Forética, this year lManagers must have a more active vision in the social commitments of companies and pay attention to financial aspects by applying ESG concepts. to address current issues such as recession, increasing demand, talent crisis and the implementation of social responsibility and sustainability in supply chains.
3- Connection with nature
Nature takes on a major role this year, being the great cornerstone that supports the system. For some time now, work has been done to counteract climate change, but the importance of nature, which according to experts represents around 50% of the world's GDP, has not been taken into account. Thus, the aim is to combat the increase in temperature by recovering nature using the implementation of the circular economy as the main weapon, in addition to betting on a new energy system. There is no NET-ZERO without Nature Positive.
4- Business action and social impact
The way society views consumers must change, as they are increasingly more responsible and demanding regarding the actions of companies. However, the recent economic crisis has complicated the implementation of sustainability policies, so companies must find a balance between economic priorities and the expectations, not only of consumers but also of their own employees.
5- The value of supply chains
Companies are trying to improve their sustainability impacts, operations and reporting, but they are finding a bottleneck in the supply chain. At this point, two ideas are proposed: the first is to make the cost tangible, taking into account that having a less prepared chain will cost more, either due to taxes or restrictions that governments will impose on certain activities; the second idea is to promote the implementation of climate commitments and ESG criteria in supply chains from governance.
