Chairs for sustainability: an alliance between academia and public administration in favour of a better tomorrow

He Botanical Garden of the University of Valencia has hosted the event 'Chairs for Sustainability' in which the Chair of Feminist Economics, the Chair of Economy of the Common Good and the Chair of Business and Humanism, all of them supported by the Ministry of Sustainable Economy, Productive Sectors, Trade and Labor of the Generalitat Valenciana, have highlighted the importance of creating alliances between academia and public administration in favor of a more sustainable future.

The day began with the intervention of Honorable Mr. Rafael Climent González, Regional Minister of Sustainable Economy, Productive Sectors, Trade, and Employment of the Generalitat Valenciana, who highlighted the importance of this type of learning event on social responsibility and sustainability in promoting the comprehensive development of the Valencian Community through research, reflection, and dialogue among all stakeholders.

Next, Ms. Rosa María Donat Beneito, Vice-Rector for Innovation and Transfer of the University of Valencia, has confirmed the good understanding between the Ministry and the Chairs of the University when building work teams that address the challenge of facing a more sustainable future through the partnerships outlined in Sustainable Development Goal 17, as part of the 2030 Agenda.

To these words has been added Mr. José Vicente Soler Gironés, Director General of Sustainable Economy, emphasizing collaboration between the Generalitat Valenciana and the University of Valencia when it comes to developing concrete actions that make sustainability more tangible for Small and Medium-Sized Enterprises (SMEs) in the Valencian Community. These SMEs, in addition to the challenges they already face due to their size, often see sustainability as another added challenge. The goal, Soler stated, is to facilitate their path toward sustainability and not leave them behind. 

Subsequently, Ms. Noelia Estarlich Hernandis, Director of Innovation and Sustainability at Almacenes Lázaro, and Ms. María Ángeles Fernández Izquierdo, Director of the Master's Degree in Sustainability and Corporate Social Responsibility at the Jaume I University, have addressed the challenges linked to sustainability in the Valencian Community. With the help of Ms. Noelia Estarlich Attendees were able to see the importance of “giving wings to change” and incorporating sustainability into the strategic purpose of companies, through a metamorphosis and a cultural (or “DNA”) change.

In turn, the intervention Ms. María Ángeles Fernández This event allowed attendees to better understand the reality of sustainability through research. He also took advantage of his presentation to discuss the importance of the Valencian Registry of Socially Responsible Entities, launched today, in enabling SMEs to demonstrate their commitment to CSR.

Last, Ms. María Luisa Moltó Carbonell, Professor of the Department of Economic Analysis of the University of Valencia; Ms. Ana Isabel Marrades Puig, Director of the Chair of Feminist Economics; Mr. Jaime Güemes Heras, Director of the Chair of Economy of the Common Good; and Mr. Tomás González Cruz, Director of Cátedra de Empresa y Humanismo, discussed the work carried out in recent years on sustainability, thanks to the sponsorship of the Regional Ministry of Sustainable Economy, Productive Sectors, Trade and Employment of the Generalitat Valenciana. This roundtable was moderated by Ms. Nuria García CebriáThe various Chairs explained their areas of work, as well as the various collaborations that have emerged in this regard. Special emphasis was placed on the process of listening, reflection, study, and dissemination that has motivated their activities, with the aim of promoting the integration of human life with the planet.
